Cul-de-Sac

What a great film. I think I've seen the majority of Polanski's films and at this point....I'm willing to call him one of the all time greats.

The film looks amazing with an unbelievable cast which included Catherine Deneuve's younger sister, Francoise Dorleac(whata knockout) playing Teresa, the wife of Donald Pleasence. Jacqueline Bissett(double ooo-la-la) also adds a small comedic cameo into the mix of loony characters.
The story centers around a newlywed couple who have their lives interrupted when two injured gangsters turn up at their dark castle on a tidal island which is only accessible by boat or car(when the tides are down). The film plays with a number of different themes and some may feel its a bit uneven due to the shifting tones throughout, but this is what i found to be so lovely about this film. Like most of his previous works in the 60's, the film deals with and explores horror, repressed sexual desire, and alienation. Its probably his least accessible 60's film, though i haven't seen The Fearless Vampire Killers(which will be my next), but I think it works on a lot of different levels from themes to just pure cinematic exceptionalism. Really looking forward to The Fearless Vampire Killers, his first foray into something light and comedic, and Polanski's first film shooting in multiple locations.
